چکیده

Methylphosphonate (MPn) metabolism has been proposed to be an aerobic source of methane in surface oceanic waters. Previous work by Daniela del Valle, C-MORE post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. David Karl, has shown that even though microbes are able produce methane from dissolved MPn in the ocean, this process is not a significant source of methane at Station ALOHA. However, this work pointed to particle-associated MPn as a potentially significant source of methane in this system. Prof. William Metcalf and collaborators recently reported a biosynthetic pathway for MPn which is relatively common in marine microbes, and they hypothesized that cellular MPn is linked to an exopolysaccharide. Currently, these two lab groups – Karl and Metcalf – are working in collaboration to quantify the amount of MPn in suspended and sedimenting material in order to look further into the role of MPn as a source of methane in surface waters of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre.

Risk Analysis of Stationary Rail Cars Containing Hazardous Materials; A Case Study

The purpose of this study is to analyze the risks associated with stationary rail cars carrying hazardous materials (Hazmat) in railway stations. This study considers risk analysis of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage cars queued in Sarakhs Railway Station in Iran. The congestion of LPG cars at station may lead to some incidents which can endanger people and cause damages to the propert...

Ecology and biogeochemistry of alkenone production at Station ALOHA

In our study of Station ALOHA, a site representative of the oligotrophic North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSG), alkenone content and composition were examined in (1) sinking particulate materials collected in sediment traps moored at 2800m during 2 year-long deployments (1992–1993 and 2000–2001) and (2) suspended particulate materials collected throughout the euphotic zone in two contrasting se...

The most Appropriate Statistical Method for Suspended Sediment Estimation of Rivers (Case Study: Roodak Station of the Jajrood Basin)

The sediment load that is transported by rivers can create numerous problems such as sedimentation in the reservoir and storage capacity reduction, developed load in the rivers, destruction of structures along the river and transfer of pollution. Therefore, an accurate estimate of the sediment load in rivers is absolutely essential for river engineering, reservoir design, sediment transportatio...
